English as an Additional Language (EAL)
Since the language of instruction is English, the objective of the support programme is to enable the inclusion of EAL (English as an Additional Language) students in the mainstream class. Although students are required to display an English profic iency level commensurate with their grade level prior to enrolment, JIES works with the EAL teacher in cooperation with the homeroom teachers to enable the EAL students’ transition into the mainstream class. This support is continued until the student has the skills and knowledge needed to access the regular curriculum.
Japanese as an Additional Language (JAL)
JAL support is provided for the non-native Japanese speakers in our school. In class support is given to the JAL kids to enable them to include to kokugo classes, whereas the native Japanese speakers follow the same Japanese program that is used in the government schools. JAL kids are provided a different program to help them learn the daily language and the basic Japanese skills.
Thanks to the small class sizes at JIES, our students are given the benefit of having instruction geared towards their specific needs. In addition to the regular whole-class activities, our teachers frequently use small-group and individual instruction. This ensures not only that the grade level curriculum needs are met but that each individual student’s needs are met, whether the need is remediation or acceleration. This reinforces our belief that each child must be treated as an individual, taking into account his or her own strengths and needs.
