Mr. Kenan ULU

Principal
Mr. Ulu is the principal of JIES International Exchange School Tokyo / JAPAN. He received his degree in education from Bosphorus University in 1995. He taught in a university in Russia for 2 years before he came to Japan in 1997. He took administrative positions in language schools in Tokyo and Nagoya previously. He has great experience and knowledge of Japan. Born in a mountainous area, he is interested in wildlife. His hobbies include camping, mountain biking, playing volleyball and eating sushi. He is married to a Japanese lady and has 3 children.

Mr. Hakan

Assistant Principal / PYP Coordinator Designate
Mr. Hakan is the assistant principal of Jingumae International Exchange School. He received his degree in Education Department. Before coming to JIES, He taught various subjects and took coordinator positions in an International School in Japan for five years. In his spare time, he enjoys jogging, reading books and watching movie. He is very excited to be a member of JIES.

Ms.Rudd

Preschool
Ms. Rudd was born and raised in Japan, but most recently hails from Washington state in the USA. She received her Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education at Knox College in Galesburg, Illinois. Last year, she could be found in New Delhi, India, teaching English through the USIEF Fulbright Program. In addition to teaching, Ms. Rudd loves dance, music, reading, and doing crafts. She is delighted to be back in Japan and working with preschool this year!

Ms. Gouge

Kindergarten
Mrs. Gouge was raised in Portland, Oregon, in the United States of America. She received her Bachelor's Degree from the University of Oregon, and her Masters of Arts in Teaching from Lewis and Clark College in Portland. She holds a Multiple Subject Teaching License in Early Childhood, and Elementary Education. Mrs. Gouge has known she wanted to be a teacher since she herself was in Kindergarten. She has a wide range of teaching experience, from teaching English to all ages, to teaching preschool, kindergarten, and fifth grade. She has taught in Oregon, Michigan, and Tokyo, Japan. In addition to her passion for teaching, she enjoys baking food free of common allergens, reading, scrapbooking, arts and crafts, and travelling with her husband. She looks forward to sharing her passion for learning, and literacy, with her kindergarteners this year.

Mr. Vodden

Grade 1
Mr. Vodden is from Toronto, Canada. He completed his Bachelor of Arts degree with Honours at Trent University in Peterborough, Ontario and his Bachelor of Education degree at the University of Ottawa in the nation's capital. Prior to joining JIES, he taught English for four years in Japanese elementary schools in Shizuoka prefecture. Mr. Vodden enjoys the outdoors and often goes hiking in the Minami Alps. He also enjoys playing the guitar and riding motorcycles.

Mr. Sullivan

Grade 2 / 3
Mr Sullivan is from Manchester, England. He has a bachelors degree with honours from Sheffield University and a Post-Graduate Certificate in Education from Southampton University. He first came to Japan in 2004 and worked as an English language teacher before moving back to England in 2008. He returned to Japan with his wife and 2 year old daughter in June 2011. Mr Sullivan enjoys watching Japanese movies, particularly those directed by Kurosawa Akira, Ichikawa Kon and Miike Takashi. He also loves watching and playing football and is a big fan of Manchester United. He is very happy to be working at JIES as it has always been his ambition to teach at an international school.

Mr. Miller

Grade 4
Mr. Miller is the Grade 4 teacher and Music Specialist at JIES for the 2011-2012 school year. He holds a Multiple Subject Teaching Credential from California State University, Northridge, and a B.F.A. in Composition from the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music in New York City. His primary musical instrument is the contrabass, and his favorite genre of music is big band jazz. He has been a classroom teacher for five years, and has taught music, both in a class setting and privately, for ten years. He enjoys inspiring students' curiosity and creativity. He has been living in Japan for one year and is excited to be a part of the international community in Tokyo.

Mr. Cooke

Grade 5 / 6
Mr. Cooke is from London. He was educated at the University of Leicester, after which he spent two years teaching English in Japan. Before coming to JIES he was teaching in a primary school in North London. Teaching is his passion, but he also enjoys playing football and going to art exhibitions as well as creating his own artwork. He is fascinated by other countries, their traditions and cultures (especially Japanese culture!).

Mr. Essiz

Math Team Teacher / Librarian
Mr.Essiz is our Maths Team Teacher and librarian. He received his BA in Maths teaching. He also studied Japanese for 1 year at a Japanese language school in Japan. He loves children and working with them. He enjoys using computers, cooking and watching movies. He is very excited to work with children and be a part of JIES.

Preschool Team Teacher
Mrs. Ak received her Bachelor's Degree from Middle East Technical University. She loves children and working with them. In her spare time, she likes jogging, hiking, reading books and watching movies. She is very excited to work with children and to become a member of JIES.

Ms. Kondo

Japanese
Ms. Kondo is the Japanese teacher of our school. She received her BA in Elementary Education at Kumamoto University, Japan. She taught at a Junior high school in Japan for six years. She likes traveling, and going to parks and libraries in her free time. She is excited to be a member of JIES.
